Real Rights: A State-By-State Legal Guide Focused on Black Children Interacting with Police in a Time of Racial Injustice
We are creating jurisdiction-specific guides to delineate the laws surrounding interactions with police so those who come in contact with law enforcement have a clear handle on what the law says the police can and cannot do. It includes consideration of state, federal and local laws. The legal analysis revolves around questions such as:
- What happens when children encounter police on the street?
- Can a youth be searched?
- Can a youth be questioned by law enforcement with an adult present?
Volunteers will look at state law, federal law and even city and municipal law where it is relevant. This project is focused on how to capture and deliver the information in a way that makes it most usable in practice for black children, youth and adults. In all the other states, we would need to collect the research and package it for easy use by those who need it most. We need to complete the resource in as many states as we can get done and, eventually, we will invite corporate partners to help on several states.
Assignment: This project is a teaming project where in-house teams partner up with Baker teams to complete the analysis for assigned jurisdictions (local city and state assignments). Both attorneys and professionals are welcome to join the project.
Type of Project: Interested corporate in-house teams interested in partnering on multiple jurisdictions are welcome!
Hours: Expect about 15 hours per volunteer.
Timing: Each jurisdiction will kick off on a rolling basis as teams are ready to get started.
